Because of this, thought we’d cover a few of the big ones.  Malware  Short for “malicious software”, malware is a broad term used categorize any software which is intended to subvert a device for malicious purposes.  This includes viruses, worms, trojans, stealers, ransomware, and spyware.    Viruses  Viruses will spread from device to device. They can destroy your files or make your computer run really slow. A virus attaches itself to a legitimate program or file and replicates itself when the infected program is executed. As a result, this can lead to widespread damage as the virus spreads to other devices through networks, email attachments, or shared files. Some viruses are designed to cause minimal harm, while others can be highly destructive, corrupting data and rendering systems inoperable. Trojans / RAT  Disguised as legitimate software, and can be installed in the background while viewing something different (e.g. PDF from email).    Once installed it provides backdoor access to the device for malicious actor(s).  Provides access to the device.  Ransomware  Will encrypt and prevent access to files.  This can affect a shared server, device, or cloud. Typically a request is made at the same time for payment with details.    Fileless Malware  Will act maliciously by using system memory, and other programs, rather than installing it’s own software. Even so, it still uses software and files, but not its own.  Emerging Threats –  AI-Powered Attacks  A recent survey reveals 60% of global IT experts consider AI-enhanced malware the most concerning AI-generated threat.  Traditional malware relies on pre-programmed instructions, which makes it predictable on analysis.  AI-enhanced malware is able to adapt and change it’s techniques.  It’s more sophisticated.   Deepfakes  Most people will have heard about the Hong Kong deep fake from last year.  Deepfake technology is rapidly advancing, with an estimated 8 million video and voice deepfakes expected to be shared on social media in 2025.  How Does Malware Commonly Get on Your Device?  Downloading bad files  Visiting bad websites  Opening bad emails, and their attachments  What can you do?  There are simple, cost-effective, tools and techniques we have on hand to mitigate your vulnerability.  Give us an email or call and we will be in touch. Receiving a notice that your data has been breached can be alarming. Unfortunately, data breaches are common, affecting banks, online platforms, ecommerce stores, and even governments. This can expose your personal information, like your address and credit card details to thieves. While you can’t control a business getting hacked, you can take important steps to protect yourself and minimize financial losses. Here are some essential actions to take if you find yourself in this situation. When it happens, you feel powerless. You get an email or letter from a business saying someone breached your data. It happens all too often today. Data breaches happen at banks, online sites like Facebook, and ecommerce stores. Not only that, but governments are also victims. This leaves things like your address and credit card details exposed to thieves. A business getting hacked is something you have little control over. But you can take important steps afterwards. We’ve outlined the most important things to do below. These steps can help you mitigate the financial losses. 1. Change Your Passwords The very first thing you should do is change your passwords. Change the password for the service that sent you the breach notification first. Then, change it for any logins using the same password. This is one of the reasons it’s a best practice to use unique logins for every site. Many people get in the habit of using the same password in several places. This leaves more than the single breached login at risk. Use a password manager to help you create strong passwords. You only need to remember one to access all the others. 2. Enable Multifactor Authentication (MFA) Multifactor authentication can keep accounts secure, even if a hacker stole the password. Enable it for the breached service. Then, ensure you have MFA activated for all other logins, where possible. MFA is also called two-factor authentication or two-step verification.Common forms of MFA are: Text message Authentication app Security key Check Your Bank Accounts If payment card details were breached, check bank accounts. You’ll want to watch these for several weeks for fraudulent charges. Report the breach to your bank to have them issue you a new card, if needed. Notify your bank about the 3rd party data breach. This can help keep you from being held responsible for fraudulent charges. It’s good to get out ahead of it. Your bank can then help you with appropriate steps to avoid fraud. 3. Carefully Review the Breach Notification It’s important to understand exactly how the data breach may impact you. These are the things you should be looking for: The type of data exposed (passwords, card numbers, etc.) What reparations the company is making (e.g., credit monitoring) Any instructions given to secure your account Regularly check the company’s website. Often, they don’t immediately know how far reaching the breach is. You may check back later and find out other types of sensitive data were exposed. 4. Get Good Cybersecurity Protections Make sure you protect your device and network. There are some simple tools you can use to beef up personal device security. These include: A good antivirus/anti-malware program DNS filtering to block malicious sites Email spam filtering for phishing Another good protection you can use is a VPN. This helps mask your traffic. It is especially helpful if you’re using a public Wi-Fi. VPNs are easy to use. You can use VPNs for both computers and mobile devices. 5. Be On the Lookout for Phishing Scams Emails are often exposed in data breaches. This means you may receive an uptick in phishing emails. Phishing is very convincing since criminals have AI at their disposal. Phishing emails often are hard to spot from the real thing. Stay ultra-aware of any unexpected emails. Follow best practices to avoid becoming a phishing victim: Hover over links to see them Go to websites directly. Don’t click email or SMS links Beware of unknown senders Watch for phishing on social media and text messages When in doubt, double check through an official source Make sure to update software & systems Hackers often exploit unpatched vulnerabilities. AI: Evolution in Technology A discussion on OpenAI, Copilot and what it can provide for your business. It was a great turn out for a cold winter evening last week for the  AI: Evolution in Technology event in collaboration with Tupu Ana at Ten O’Clock Cookie in Masterton. With over 40 of us packed into Ten CC to enjoy delectable treats and great company, everyone was ready to hear about OpenAI, Copilot and what it can provide for your business. Presented by Philip Harvey, Ohnyx’ Director of Technical & Operations, Philip discussed how AI has already been a part of our lives for the past 15 years. AI is turning up everywhere now, but what’s new is how we can use it, not AI itself. OpenAI has opened the doors to numerous opportunities with its new innovative AI modelling. One such innovation is Microsoft taking OpenAI’s model and using it in their workspace under the name Copilot. Philip did a brilliant job demystifying Copilot for 365. He explained Copilot works best as a tool in the hands of an expert, doing 60% of the work. Covering off the hard yards. You will still need to do other 40%. This includes fact checking, tweaking the voice to be suitable for your audience, and of course adding your own flare. Copilot is set to create labor efficiencies, the look and shape of this depends on your business. Key questions to ask yourself are: What do I want to do more of? What do I want to do less of? What are the pain points? The presentation focused on broad questions and demonstrating Copilot live with audience interaction. Looking at how these efficiencies can be gained in your company will require a more in-depth discussion. Philip cautioned the need to ensure your Microsoft Tenancy (organisation data) is ready for Copilot. Data needs to be ring fenced and permissions checked, such as finance and human resource data. Copilot will scan all accessible data and provide access where permissions allow. The live demo was the most impressive part of the night. Philip requested suggestions from the audience to challenge Copilots creative abilities. In no time, complete Word essays and PowerPoint presentations were generated on these topics; sausage rolls, garden gnomes, and the strengths and weakness of the New Zealand Electoral system. Each PowerPoint had professional design, content and photos that matched the topic. It was incredible to see how fast you could go from a concept to a full presentation.
