When it comes to malicious cyber activity we see a number of terms through around in the media. While they’re all malicious, they all work a bit differently. Because of this, thought we’d cover a few of the big ones.
Short for “malicious software”, malware is a broad term used categorize any software which is intended to subvert a device for malicious purposes. This includes viruses, worms, trojans, stealers, ransomware, and spyware.
Viruses will spread from device to device. They can destroy your files or make your computer run really slow. Will encrypt and prevent access to files. This can affect a shared server, device, or cloud. Typically a request is made at the same time for payment with details.
Will act maliciously by using system memory, and other programs, rather than installing it’s own software. Even so, it still uses software and files, but not its own.
A recent survey reveals 60% of global IT experts consider AI-enhanced malware the most concerning AI-generated threat. Traditional malware relies on pre-programmed instructions, which makes it predictable on analysis. AI-enhanced malware is able to adapt and change it’s techniques. It’s more sophisticated.
Most people will have heard about the Hong Kong deep fake from last year. Deepfake technology is rapidly advancing, with an estimated 8 million video and voice deepfakes expected to be shared on social media in 2025.
